Capitola real estate info

A town in Santa Cruz County, just six miles east of Santa Cruz, the city of Capitola, California, is one of the oldest beach resorts in California and is home to a population of just under 10,000. An estimate taken in July 2008 showed the population at around 9,600, a decrease of more than 4% since the 2000 census. The city makes up an area of about 1.7 square miles and is west of Aptos and east of Live Oak.

The town lies right on Monterey Bay on the ocean’s coast, which has helped make it a popular tourist destination. Local shops and restaurants on the coast connect to a fishing wharf and the beach, and make the locale an enjoyable spot. Capitola is just off of New Brighton State Beach and home to Anna Jean Cummings Park. It began in the 1800s as a lumber port, founded by Samuel A. Hall in 1874, and later revamped its identity into that of a resort town.

Today, Capitola's residents have a median household income measured to be over $57,500 in 2008, for a per capita income of more than $36,500. Capitola homes in 2008 were measured to have a median value of more than $616,000, though prices and values may have fallen significantly since those estimates were taken in light of the state of the greater national real estate market. The community is located in the Soquel Union Elementary School District and is home to New Brighton Middle School, one special-education school and one alternative school.

Soquel Creek travels through the town and is the site of the annual Begonia Festival each September. That same month, the town is also host to the Capitola Art & Wine Festival. In the spring, a dog festival and annual dog parade is celebrated to recognize residents’ pets. Those interested in learning more about the area’s history can take it all in at the Capitola Historical Museum, and local arts and crafts can be viewed and purchased at one of the six galleries in Capitola. The weather here is generally warm and sunny, with ocean breezes blowing through the streets and alleys. Shopping can be done at Capitola Mall and the Brown Ranch Marketplace. The nearest hospitals are just a short trip away in Santa Cruz, and the nearest international airport is in San Jose.
